According to ayurved pitta gets accumulated (संचय)during rainy
season(varshaa rutu) .The rain water is acidic in nature .This water
aggrevates pitta in our body which is a natural phenomenon. To
neutralise this pitta which is अम्ल(acidic), उष्ण (develops heat), and तीक्ष्ण(sharp) one of the Panchkarma is VIRECHANAM.
Virechana is the karma for PITTA SHODHAN (removal of excess pitta from body).
Virechana means use of some substances ,or medicines that cause loose motion, by way of which pitta is excreted .
Milk is one of those eatables used for this pupose. It is a mild Virechan Dravya (substance).
To reduce this pitta there is a tradition called Kojagiri .
On this night it is a custom to drink milk which is prepared by boiling, then adding keshar, badam, pista , velachi etc. dryfruits to it. Kojagiri is a full moon night of Sharad rutu (Ashwin month of Hindu calender). Moon is sheet, snigdha and milk is also sheet ,snigdha and madhur in nature which is opposite to pitta gunas. So drinking ample quantity of milk on kojagiri night is a best combination to nullify the illeffects of pitta.
Nowadays people celebrate this eve by eating spicy food like pavbhaji, vadapaav,or such other snacks prior to milk. But this doesn't solve the purpose .So don't eat any such things rather skipping dinner and everything and only drinking warm milk is the best way to celebrate this occasion and reap the health benefit too!!!
So lets celebrate this event .
